Luxury Romantic Getaways in Devon

Looking for luxury romantic getaways in Devon? We don’t blame you! There is nothing quite like following tree-lined walks to deserted beaches to watch glistening waters tinged with the orange hues of the perfect evening’s sunset to ensure romance is truly in the air, North Devon really is the perfect Romantic break destination!

Whether you want to hunker down after a breath-taking walk around a cosy log fire in an award-winning gastro pub or prefer your dinner alfresco style with a luxury beach picnic after a day’s paddle-boarding around a secluded cove – your perfect romantic stay will have you falling in love all over again!

Read our selection of the best places to visit in North Devon for couples and discover some of the very best romantic things to do as a pair!

Old world villages

There is nothing quite as romantic as heading off the beaten track and getting lost down flower-lined alleyways framing distant views of the blue seas ahead.

North Devon is brimming with old seaside villages full of charm, character, beauty and all the essence of North Devon. Fall in love with the area and the air of historic romance by the coast.

In no order here are just a couple of our favourites…

Looking on to Lynton and Lynmouth
Lynton & Lynmouth

Clovelly

The famously romantic Clovelly village stoops off the cliffs of Hartland, with its cobbled no vehicle access streets allowing only wooden sledges to aid residents of the village transport to ferry their goods up and down its steep alleys, this village really does ooze the sense of yesterday year!

Whitewash cottages dating back to the 14th century brimming with floral gardens meander along the pretty cobbled lanes. Follow the lane down to the historic harbour which again feels untouched by time to truly feel what life was like in a fishing village 100 years ago – but perhaps over a glass of your favourite in the Red lion pub, romantic or what!

LYNTON & LYNMOUTH

Nestled within the tree-lined cliffs overlooking the blue waters of the Bristol channel, the charming town of Lynton offers some spectacular views throughout all seasons.

Lynmouth is a historic harbour town set below at the mouth of the river Lyn, with some gorgeous boutique shops, cafes and art galleries you can easily lose a day mooching between the alleyways and getting lost within the breath-taking scenery – no wonder so many artists call this place home.

The two towns are connected by the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway, a unique water-powered funicular train that is the highest and steepest of its build in the world, it offers exceptional views and an all-around quirky experience!

The only downfall of this alpine location on the sea is the heartache of leaving!

PERFECT PICNICS

A romantic guide to North Devon wouldn’t be complete if we did not talk about the perfect picnic. With a natural landscape allowing for some of the most romantic settings in the UK (if we do say so ourselves) get your picnic blankets at the ready as we have some fantastic recommendations to have you connecting with your partner beyond the restrictions of four walls.

Whether it’s out on your favourite beach spot under the sun or cosied up together under the stars on Exmoor there are so many perfect picnic spots around North Devon all you have to do is follow the Southwest coast path and the picnic spots will capture your imagination.

Here are a few of our favourite ways to picnic around North Devon.

Romantic picnic on a Devon beach

MORTE POINT

Despite its rather morbid name literally meaning death-point due to it being the site of many shipwrecks in the past, five ships were wrecked in the winter on 1852 alone. This stunning headland offers some unbeatable views over Woolacombe Bay and across to Lundy Island. The surrounding grassland is short due to the resident’s sheep so beware you may be sharing your picnic with a few unwanted guests! The nearest parking is within the pretty village of Mortehoe, also worth visiting either before or after your picnic with its assortment of cafes and local pubs!

Our favourite romantic view is across to Bull Point lighthouse, which is Northeast to the point, what can be more romantic then the distant beacon of a lighthouse, stop now!

HARTLAND HERITAGE COAST

If you like your picnic spot wild and rocky then the rough beauty of Hartland point will capture your heart and imagination like no other stretch of coastline!

With some secluded spots and draw-dropping views you can often find your own slice of heaven with views of distant waterfalls cascading off red-tinged cliffs onto the sea-beaten rocks below, this really is ‘proper’ Devon coast territory!

The national trust site has more information about some of the planned walking routes here https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/bideford-bay-and-hartland  but one of our favourite spots is exploring Bucks Mills beach where you can enjoy exploring the tiny hamlet of Bucks mill before descending onto the beach below bucks mill cabin where resident artists have taken residence since 1920.

make a splash!

There is nothing better than disconnecting from the hum of everyday life and spending quality time with your significant other, no phones, no distractions just the two of you – now that’s romance!

The feel of fresh sea air on your skin and water under your feet can give you a new perspective and open to deeper and more meaningful conversations – as we have the most amazing stretch of coastline on our doorstep, we strongly advise making a splash with that someone special!

Here are a few of our favourite ways to spend time together in the water!

Paddleboard session for two

If you are not au fait with surfing but want to experience life on the open water, then we recommend trying stand-up paddle boarding – you can either hire single paddle boards or share an XL paddleboard which will offer more stability and allow both of you to be that little bit closer.

It is best to take these boards out during calm days with less swell (waves!) and stay close to the coastline as instructed by your rental company, this will also allow you to spot some of the beautiful scenery and the habitants that call it home. Some of our favourite spots for paddle boarding around the North Devon coast are Hele Bay, Watermouth Cove and Woolacombe.

sunset coast!

North Devon has been described as the sunset coast, whether you like to watch yours falling behind rolling hills or stretch across open expanses of calm seas you will be sure to be captured by the beauty of the moment.

Here are a few of our favourite places to watch the sunset in North Devon!

Romantic sunset on a Devon beach

hele bay

woolacombe dunes

The dunes offer a fantastic sheltered raised viewpoint enjoy watching the sun melt across the sea after a day by the coast. We recommend grabbing a picnic blanket and a bottle of something you like, perhaps a cosy blanket for two to keep warm from the sea breeze.

Afterwards, head to one of the local bars to soak up the last of the sunset over a cocktail such as Brundles or Tides Inn.

Valley of rocks

Surely there is no better place to watch the sunset than from on top of the dramatic rock formations of the Valley of Rocks. Exmoor never disappoints when it comes to the varied landscape, but this sunset spot will leave you in speechless. The deep valley floor lays land to steep cliffs either side which climb skyward leading to sculptured rock-like formations said to be once caused by the old path of the river Lyn.

You can climb to the cliff tops or follow the coastal path around to find your desired sunset viewing platform, wherever you choose you will not be disappointed with spectacular panoramic seascapes!

Look out for the resident wild goats and ponies, this is a very magical place to enjoy your sunset indeed! Afterwards why not head to nearby Lynton and Lynmouth? We recommend a drink in the Ancient Mariners for a true taste of old coastal romance.

wild walks

Take a walk down memory lane with a romantic walk in the countryside hand in hand, lose the crowds and surround yourself with peace and tranquillity allowing space for deep conversations and share memories of your kinship and make plans for your future together.

Walks around North Devon allow for moments of rare seclusion making you feel closer then you can anywhere else, give in and allow the stunning scenery to seduce you.

Here are a few of our favourite romantic walking spots!

View over Watermouth harbour
Watermouth

heddon’s valley

Meander through this glorious valley once a favourite of romantic poets of Wordsworth and Coleridge. It’s the perfect setting for romantic walks set between the coast and ancient woodland. With a babbling river leading down to a pebbled beach at Heddon’s mouth this stunning cliff-lined beach of geological importance is a haven to many ecological including wildflower, butterflies, seals and porpoises.

Take your shoes off and feel the cool waters along the many dipping spots along the way or forage for blackberries and gooseberries in Autumn, this walk is a romantic delight within any season.

baggy point

If you are looking for an out-and-out romantic hit, then it’s hard to beat Baggy Point. It’s hard to miss the imposing headline jutting into the Atlantic like an outstretched stretched finger (I Do!) along the North Devon coastline.

This SSI is rightfully recognised as a very special place by many locals, with walking routes with varied gradients there is something to suit all levels of enthusiasm.

Find a bench your preferred bench with a view and enjoy taking in the moment with your loved one, look out for resident sheep, seals, the call from nesting oystercatchers the odd porpoise if you are lucky!
