Looking to learn how to paddle board? We don’t blame you – paddle boarding is a fantastic way to connect with nature while getting a full-body workout. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your skills, this handy guide will walk you through the essentials of paddle boarding.

What Size Paddle Board Do I Need?
The first step to paddle boarding success is selecting the appropriate board size. Here’s how to find the perfect fit:
1. Wide Boards are Good for Beginners
- As a beginner, you should opt for a wider board (around 32-34 inches) for, which will help with stability.
- As you improve, you can progress to shorter and narrower boards for improved speed and maneuverability.
2. Body Weight Matters
- Lighter individuals should go for narrower boards.
- Heavier paddlers may require wider boards for stability.
3. Board Length
- Shorter boards (around 9-10 feet) are more maneuverable.
- Longer boards (11-12 feet) provide better tracking and stability, so are more suited to you as a beginner.
What To Wear Paddle Boarding
Proper clothing ensures comfort and safety while paddle boarding:
1. Swimwear or Wetsuit
- In warmer conditions, opt for swimwear or board shorts.
- In cooler waters, wear a wetsuit to stay warm.
2. Sun Protection
- Apply sunscreen to exposed skin.
- Consider wearing a sun hat and sunglasses with a strap to protect your eyes.
3. Footwear
- Barefoot or water shoes are ideal for paddle boarding.
- Avoid wearing bulky trainers or flip-flops.
4. Personal Floatation Device (PFD)
- For your safety, we would recommend the use of a Personal Floatation Device (PFD).
- When hiring, this is normally supplied along with your paddle board.
How To Stand Up On A Paddle Board
Proper posture on your paddle board is key to a stable and enjoyable experience:
1. Begin on Calm Water
- Start in calm, flat water to practice your stance.
- If you feel nervous about standing, or find it too hard, try kneeling first to build up your confidence.
2. The Right Stance
- Stand facing forward with feet parallel, hip-width apart.
- Keep your knees slightly bent to absorb shock and maintain balance.
3. Hand Placement
- Hold the paddle with one hand on top (the “T-grip”) and the other on the shaft.
- Ensure the blade is oriented correctly – it should be facing away from you.
4. Paddle Technique
- Reach forward with the paddle, immerse it fully, and pull it back in a straight line.
- Engage your core and twist your torso for power.
5. Balancing Act
- Shift your weight by bending your knees or leaning slightly to the side for balance.
- Stand in the centre of your board – there’s a carrying handle here, just put your feet either side of it.
- Keep your gaze forward, not at your feet.
6. Practice Makes Perfect
- Expect to wobble at first; balance improves with practice.
- Experiment with different conditions and paddling techniques.
7. Don’t Worry About Falling In The Water!
No matter your skill level, the allure of paddle boarding lies in the thrill of the journey. Even the most seasoned paddlers must occasionally embrace the refreshing plunge into the water. It’s all part of the experience! So, if you find yourself feeling a bit wobbly, don’t fret. Remember, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is a watersport meant to be enjoyed, splashes and all.
More Paddle Boarding Tips
We asked some experienced paddle boarders for their top paddle boarding tips – here’s what they wished they knew when they started out:
1. Check for a cord
Paddle boards should come with a cord to attach the board to your leg – this is important, in case you fall off, as it will stop the board floating away and getting lost. So if you don’t have a cord, get one!
2. Use an electric pump
Using a foot pump to pump up your paddle board can wear you out before you’ve even begun. So to have the best paddle boarding experience, go for an electric pump. And if hiring, don’t worry – your paddle board will typically be provided already pumped up.
3. Always check the tides
If where you are paddle boarding is affected by tides, and the tide is going out, it can take you away from the shore fast. This means you could have trouble getting back to safety, so is something to be aware of – don’t get caught out!
4. Get a waterproof phone case
Get a waterproof phone case so that you can take your phone and make a call in case you get into trouble with the tides, or anything else!
5. Wash your board off with fresh water
Each time you paddle board, be sure to wash your board off with fresh water, as salt water can damage the plastic over time.
6. Invest in a dry bag
Dry bags are especially designed for paddle boarders, and are great for storing things like your shoes, a towel, sunblock and drinking water.
7. Don’t leave valuables on the shore
Never leave anything valuable on the shore unattended – so if you’re leaving your shoes behind, make sure they aren’t your best pair!
8. Check the wind speed
As a beginner, wind can be trouble – so check the forecast and be aware anything above 9-10mph (or 8 knots) can cramp your paddle boarding style. Even experienced paddle boarders tell us they don’t go out in wind speeds over 15mph,
