Woolacombe Beach and Dunes: Your Doorstep Playground

The beach at Woolacombe is not just the headline attraction of a North Devon holiday, it is one of the finest play environments in the entire country for children, and the fact that it sits just four minutes on foot from Byron makes it one of the most extraordinary location advantages imaginable. Three miles of golden sand, a World Surfing Reserve designation, and reliably clean water combine to create a natural playground that genuinely needs nothing added to it.

The wide, gently shelving beach is brilliant for younger children. The tide goes out a long way, leaving vast stretches of firm, flat sand perfect for running, ball games, sandcastle building, and kite flying. The surf is legendary and the numerous surf schools operating on the beach provide lessons for children from around six years upwards, with qualified instructors who make the whole experience safe, fun, and genuinely exciting. Watching a child catch their first wave, even a small white water one, is one of those holiday moments that nobody forgets.

At the northern end of the beach near the village, the dunes provide their own additional playground. Children disappear into them naturally, climbing, rolling, exploring and discovering the sheltered hollows and high points that make a sand dune system so irresistible to young imaginations. The dunes here connect with the wider coastal path, offering endless scope for further exploration.

The village itself has everything a family needs within a short walk of the beach: ice cream shops, cafes, beach equipment hire, surf shops, and a relaxed, holiday atmosphere that is authentically North Devon rather than manufactured.

Starting your day with a walk down from Byron to the beach, watching the surf, and letting the children loose on three miles of golden sand is as good as a family holiday morning gets. This is why people come back to Woolacombe year after year.
