Tucked into a sheltered wooded valley on the North Devon coast, Watermouth Castle is the kind of place that makes little ones genuinely believe in magic. Just around fifteen minutes from Byron, this Victorian castle has been transformed into a wonderland of family entertainment that works brilliantly whatever the weather is doing outside.
Inside, the dungeon-themed amusements are a firm favourite with the little ones, full of gnomes, castles, and those old-fashioned mechanical rides that delight toddlers in a way that no screen ever quite manages. The fairground rides are perfectly pitched for young children, and the interactive water shows keep everyone captivated. Older siblings tend to love the model railway and the working waterwheel, so this is genuinely one of those rare spots where every age group finds something to adore.
On a sunny day, the outdoor areas come into their own. The splash zones and adventure play areas have a lovely chaotic energy, and the grounds feel spacious enough that you never feel crowded. On a rainy day, the indoor sections absorb the children completely. You can easily fill a full day here without feeling like you have run out of things to do.
Watermouth is particularly wonderful for families with toddlers and pre-schoolers. The pace is gentle, the stimulation is constant but not overwhelming, and the whole place has a slightly eccentric, timeless quality that feels nothing like a corporate theme park. There are picnic areas if you want to bring your own food, and the cafe offers honest, straightforward meals that hungry small people will actually eat.
It sits on the A399 between Ilfracombe and Combe Martin, a gorgeous stretch of coast road that is worth the drive on its own. Bring waterproofs just in case, pack a change of clothes for the splash zones, and set aside a full day. This one never disappoints.
