Watermouth Castle is one of those reliably cheerful family days out that younger children in particular tend to remember with great fondness. The Victorian castle itself is a proper building, 1820s Gothic revival on a promontory above Watermouth Cove, with the sea visible in the background, and the juxtaposition of genuine heritage architecture with toboggans, water rides and crazy golf gives the place an enjoyably eccentric character.
Inside, the castle has armoury displays, a dungeon walk, Gnomeland (exactly what it sounds like), and period-dressed rooms that give it a genuine heritage dimension alongside the theme park rides. Outside, the grounds spread across about 50 acres with the family rides spread through the gardens and woodland: the Toboggan Run, Big River boat ride, Junior Aviator, and an outdoor splash play area are the main draws.
The park is aimed primarily at families with younger children, roughly 2 to 12 is the sweet spot, and it achieves this target well. There is enough to fill a full day without feeling overwhelming, and the castle setting provides a backdrop that sets it apart from more generic theme parks.
Watermouth Cove itself, visible from the castle grounds, is a stunning small inlet, one of the prettiest in North Devon, and the castle is perched right above it.
Watermouth Castle is about 8 miles from Woolacombe on the A399 towards Combe Martin. Seasonal opening from Easter to late October; check the website for specific dates and prices.
Watermouth Castle is best visited on a dry day when the outdoor sections are fully operational, though several of the main attractions are under cover and the park remains worthwhile in mixed weather. The café and restaurant on site are adequate for a full day visit. Older children may find some of the rides less challenging than at larger parks, but for the younger age group the variety and the castle setting make it a very satisfying day.
