Putsborough Sands

At the southern end of Woolacombe Bay, where the beach narrows and the cliffs rise up to meet Baggy Point, you will find Putsborough Sands. Quieter, more sheltered and with a certain laid-back charm all of its own, Putsborough is the kind of beach that rewards those willing to go just a little further.

The sand here is the same glorious golden variety that defines this stretch of North Devon coast, and the water clarity on a calm summer’s day is genuinely brilliant. The southern position of the beach means it is somewhat sheltered from the prevailing north-westerly swell, making it excellent for swimming and paddling. The surf is there when the conditions are right, but the gentler nature of the waves is what draws families back year after year.

Rock pools abound at the base of the cliffs and at the edges of the beach at low tide, and they are world class for exploring with children. Crabs, starfish, anemones. Putsborough’s pools offer a brilliant introduction to coastal wildlife. The whole area feels unhurried and wonderfully natural, with the dramatic backdrop of Baggy Point rising up to the south.

Parking is available at the top of the beach road with a small charge, and the on-site cafe serves a great selection of hot and cold food, drinks and ice cream from spring through to autumn. There are toilets on site too, making this one of the more practical beaches on this stretch of coast for families managing a full day visit.

Dogs are welcome all year round, with only a small zone restricted during peak season. The walk along the beach towards Woolacombe at low tide is one of North Devon’s finest, with the full three miles of bay stretching out ahead of you and the dunes rolling away to your right. This is coastal Devon at its very best.
