Croyde, Braunton, Devon, EX33 1NY
Croyde needs little introduction to anyone who knows the North Devon coast. This small village behind one of the UK’s finest surf beaches has a character entirely its own: thatched cottages, surf hire shops, excellent cafés and some of the best pub food in the area, all within easy walking distance of a beach that the waves have been making famous for decades.
The village itself has an unhurried, slightly bohemian quality that comes from generations of surfers, holidaymakers and creative people choosing to spend time here. In summer it has a lively, sociable energy; in autumn and winter, when the surf often improves, it becomes quieter and more local in feel without losing any of its charm.
From the village, the walk to Baggy Point takes about 25 minutes on good paths, climbing above the south end of Croyde Bay for stunning views back along the beach and out to Lundy Island. The Tarka Trail connects to nearby Braunton, and the path along the top of Saunton Down to Saunton Sands is one of the most rewarding short walks in the area.
Croyde Bay is north-facing, which gives it some of the best and most consistent surf on the Bristol Channel coast. Surf lessons are available from several schools based in the village, and equipment hire is plentiful.
Croyde is about 5 miles from Woolacombe and worth a visit even if you have no intention of getting in the water. The Blue Groove, Manor House Inn and several excellent cafés will look after you very well indeed.
The area around Croyde also has excellent cycling, with the Tarka Trail accessible from Braunton and quiet lanes connecting the village to Georgeham and the surrounding countryside. Croyde Bay Holidays and several local operators offer surf lessons for all abilities from the beach, and the standard of instruction is generally high. Even on a calm day when the surf is minimal, the beach at Croyde is one of the finest in North Devon and well worth an afternoon regardless of wave conditions.
