Bull Point Lighthouse

Bull Point Lighthouse stands on the headland north of Mortehoe, where the coast begins its great sweep towards the Bristol Channel, and the walk out to it from Mortehoe village is one of the finest short coastal walks in the Woolacombe area. The lighthouse has marked the rocks and shoals of this dangerous stretch of coast since 1879, and even though it is not open to the public inside, the setting is spectacular enough to make the walk entirely worthwhile.

The approach follows the South West Coast Path from Mortehoe along the clifftops, crossing through National Trust farmland with views across to Lundy Island and down to Rockham Bay, a secluded cove accessible only on foot that few day-trippers ever discover. The lighthouse itself sits at the end of the headland, its white tower visible for some distance before you arrive.

The keepers’ cottages attached to the lighthouse are now holiday lets managed privately, but the lighthouse and the headland are publicly accessible via the coastal path. Trinity House maintains the light, which is still active and visible far out into the Bristol Channel.

The circular walk from Mortehoe village via the coast path to Bull Point and back through the fields is about 3 miles and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours at a leisurely pace. It is one of the most rewarding short walks directly accessible from Woolacombe, and less than 10 minutes’ drive from your door.

The path from Mortehoe to Bull Point follows the top of the cliffs, with views down to rocky coves that are inaccessible by any other means. Rockham Bay, about halfway along the path, is one of the finest secluded beaches on this stretch of coast: only reachable on foot, and usually quiet even in peak season. The combination of coastal drama, wildlife, and genuine remoteness on a walk that starts less than ten minutes from Woolacombe makes the Bull Point circular one of the most rewarding short outings directly available from your accommodation.
