The Old Lifeboat House, The Quay, Ilfracombe, Devon, EX34 9EQ
The old lifeboat house on Ilfracombe Pier, with its view straight up the harbour and across to the Verity statue, is one of the most perfect settings for an aquarium anywhere in the South West, and the Ilfracombe Aquarium makes wonderful use of it. Genuinely award-winning and consistently highly rated, this is one of those you attractions that exceeds expectations every time.
The focus throughout is on North Devon and the wider South West coastal marine environment, and the authenticity of this approach is what makes it work so well. The displays trace an imaginary journey from the coastal rock pools and the estuaries, through the open channel, and out to deeper offshore habitats, with the species displayed in each section genuinely reflecting what lives there. Touch tanks allow hands-on encounters with native species, and the seahorse breeding programme is a highlight, one of the most successful operations of its kind in the country.
The staff are enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and the whole operation has the feel of a place that genuinely cares about what it does rather than simply processing you. The aquarium is a short walk from the harbour car park, and the pier setting means it combines very naturally with a walk around the harbour front and a look at Verity.
Ilfracombe Aquarium is about 6 miles from Woolacombe and is one of the best rainy-day options in the area. Open daily from Easter to October, with reduced winter hours.
The aquarium is managed with clear genuine enthusiasm by its team, and the seasonal special events, including rockpool rambles led by aquarium staff at low tide on the nearby shore, are consistently popular and well-regarded. These events add an outdoor dimension to the aquarium visit that extends the experience well beyond the building itself. The pier location means that the aquarium visit is naturally combined with a walk around the harbour, a look at Verity, and possibly a short climb to Lantern Hill and St Nicholas Chapel.
